Prevention is the key

There's no point putting off dental check-ups.

Smileplus dentist Dr Stephen Coulson says a study by consumer advocate Choice found one in four Australians are living with untreated tooth decay, and that it wasn’t just fear that discouraged many people from regularly visiting the dentist.

“The study revealed one in three Australians avoided the dentist because of cost,” he says.

“The Rudd Government introduced the Medicare Teen Dental Plan, which provides financial assistance to families to encourage teenagers to have an annual dental check-up and clean.

“It also encourages good oral-hygiene habits in an effort to decrease the risk of dental problems in later life.”

Also in place is a dental plan for the treatment of the elderly or people suffering from chronic health problems.

If approval is given by a medical practitioner, patients can receive dental care from a private dentist under the Enhanced Primary Care Programme.

Dr Coulson says a big concern for dentists is the number of parents and carers who are still not getting the message about the dangers of giving sweetened drinks to children.

“We still see young children needing extractions because they have been given sipper cups or bottles filled with fruit juice, cordial or even fizzy soft drinks as a soother,” he says.

“First teeth should be retained up until the time the secondary teeth are erupting, as this aids in tooth alignment and facial-bone development.”

Dr Coulson also suggests eating a balanced diet, brushing twice a day and daily flossing.
